I don’t have all that much to say so I am going to be keeping this short and sweet. Julia Ducournau makes you skin crawl again with her latest body horror Alpha. While its allegory to the AIDS crisis is a bit on the nose and tone-deaf, Alpha fully explores the alienation, hostility, and grief that many of those suffering from AIDS face through the eyes of the 13-year-old child who may have the mysterious disease that turns people into Marbel. With strong performances from Melissa Boros and Tahar Rahim, Alpha itself is a worthwhile and uncomfortable watch. However, Alpha overstays its welcome and becomes a bit of a bore by the end of its runtime as you understand its message. Though not perfect, Alpha is the brave filmmaking that I would expect from none other than Julia Ducournau.
