After more than a decade away from feature filmmaking, Na Hong-jin returns with Hope, a wildly entertaining sci-fi action spectacle that abandons expectations of a slow-burn mystery in favor of pure cinematic chaos. Set in a remote town near the DMZ that finds itself under siege by an unknown extraterrestrial threat, the film quickly transforms into a relentless barrage of action, destruction, and suspense. While the narrative itself remains relatively straightforward and the characters function more as archetypes than fully developed individuals, Hope compensates with extraordinary craftsmanship. From its immersive sound design and razor-sharp editing to its breathtaking stunt work and massive practical set pieces, the film delivers one exhilarating sequence after another. Loud, brutal, and unapologetically crowd-pleasing, Hope may lack the thematic depth of Na’s earlier work, but it succeeds as one of the most thrilling and entertaining theatrical experiences of the year.
