Prior to its world premiere at Telluride, writer-director Mike Leigh announced that Tender Loving Care would likely be his final film due to an undisclosed illness. While his legacy is already firmly established, the film nevertheless feels like a filmmaker saying goodbye. Following devoted social worker Amy (Kate O’Flynn) as she balances the demands of her job with caring for her father, Geoff (Paul Jesson), as he begins showing signs of dementia, Leigh once again finds humor and heartbreak in ordinary life. The film’s first hour can feel aimless and slow, but its naturalistic dialogue, charming performances, and warmth make spending time with these characters incredibly comforting. Once Geoff’s condition becomes impossible to ignore, the film takes a devastating turn, exploring the emotional realities of caring for an aging parent. Small and intimate, Tender Loving Care ultimately becomes a deeply universal story about family, aging, and the importance of having a community to lean on when life becomes difficult.
