If there was a film that came out of nowhere to rock the Cannes Film Festival, it would be La Bola Negra (The Black Ball) from directing duo Los Javis. Spanning three narratives across nearly a century, the film traces the evolution of the queer experience from persecution and silence to greater freedom and visibility. Despite its ambitious historical scope, Los Javis never lose sight of the intimate stories at its center, whether through forbidden romance during the Spanish Civil War or the lingering weight of inherited memory in the present day. Each timeline carries its own visual identity while remaining united through themes of love, identity, and resilience. Though the film occasionally drags in its middle stretches, its emotional power, exhilarating musical numbers, and excellent performances make The Black Ball feel destined to stand as a landmark of queer cinema.
