
Andrew Patterson’s The Rivals of the Amziah King is a wonderfully strange and ambitious Southern hoedown that deserved far more attention. The film begins as a warm love letter to Southern Americana, filled with community, hospitality, bluegrass, and the charming relationship between Amziah and Kateri. However, when tragedy strikes, it transforms into a darker Southern Gothic noir about revenge, justice, and vigilantism. While its shifting genres occasionally create clunky transitions, the film remains consistently captivating. Matthew McConaughey delivers a charismatic performance, while newcomer Angelina LookingGlass is equally compelling. Unconventional, heartfelt, and brimming with Southern flavor, it is difficult to forget.
